History

Europeans first came to the Jacksonville area in 1562, with the French establishing a fortress, Fort Caroline, in the region in 1664 before its capture by the Spanish in 1565. Spain ceded the Jacksonville region to the British in 1763 before reacquiring it in 1783.However, Spain ceded the area to the United States for good in 1821 and the city of Jacksonville was established in 1832. The city became a key port in the American Civil War and grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A fire in 1901 devastated the city but it quickly recovered and once again established itself as a major center for commerce and industry after World War II. Today, Jacksonville stands as the largest city in Florida and sports a growing and increasingly diverse population.

It is the county seat of Duval County, with which the city government consolidated in 1968. Consolidation gave Jacksonville its great size and placed most of its metropolitan population within the city limits; with a population of 827,908, it is the most populous city proper in Florida and the Southeast, and the eleventh most populous in the United States. Jacksonville is the principal city in the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area, with a population of 1,345,596 in 2010.
